The Department of Anthropology was established by late D.N. Majumdar in the year 1952. Earlier, from 1928 it was in the Department of Economics and Sociology as a Postgraduate optional paper on Cultural Anthropology. With the increasing popularity of Anthropology, an introductory course was started in B.A. consisting of a paper each on Prehistory, Physical Anthropology, and Cultural anthropology.
For several years it is being taught in nine colleges affiliated to Lucknow University.
